KDDI to Team up with Cable Operators for Wi-Fi Service Expansion in Japan

KDDI plans to cooperate with Japanese cable operators on Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) network expansion and set up approximately 15,000 wireless access points across the country in the next fiscal year, according to a January 13, 2012 report by Nikkei. KDDI is reported to manage the hotspots and offer Wi-Fi services to cable operators' and its own Smartphone subscribers. KDDI projects to kick off a pilot project in January 2012 with Jupiter Telecommunications and launch trial services with its subsidiary Japan Cablenet. The Wi-Fi service project is slated for official launch in March 2012. KDDI plans to sigh-up about 80 cable operators by the end of fiscal year 2012.
